Kataji: Combatting Hoaxes and Radicalism Through Digital Literacy

Kataji is more than an educational mobile app. It began as an academic research initiative at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, but the design journey transformed it into something bigger: a service that encourages people to question, verify, and rethink their relationship with digital information.

The purpose was never just to build an application. It was to take academic findings and translate them into a tool that could live in everyday contexts, shaping how people act when confronted with misinformation. Kataji was designed as both a product and a service touchpoint, showing how design can bridge the gap between research and real impact.

Indonesia has one of the world’s fastest-growing digital communities, yet media literacy has not kept pace. Falsehoods spread quickly, fueled by memes, catchy headlines, and emotional triggers. The consequences are not abstract. They appear in how trust erodes between communities, how division grows, and how civic discourse weakens.

The insight from research was striking: people often spread misinformation not because they intend harm, but because verifying truth feels complicated, inaccessible, or too time-consuming. This gap was the opportunity. If we could make verification easier and literacy more engaging, people could begin to respond differently. Kataji was designed to answer that “why change,” offering a tangible service within a much larger social challenge.
